Segment 1
You must be at least 14 years and 8 months old before the first day of class. A Segment 1 course consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and 4 hours of observation. Students are given an exam on their last day of segment one and must get 70 percent or better on the exam to finish the course.
The course spans six weeks (three weeks of classroom instruction and three weeks of driving instruction). Students must complete two classroom sessions before beginning on-road instruction, which will be completed within three weeks of the students' last classroom session.
After completing Segment 1, the student must visit the Secretary of State to obtain a Level 1 Learner's License before they can drive with a licensed parent or guardian. Students CANNOT drive with their course completion certificate. Students will receive their certificate of completion after their last driving lesson from their driving instructor as long as all other course requirements have been met.
For students under 18, completing Segment 1 is the first step toward obtaining their license. Students must also take Segment 2 and a road test to obtain their license.
A $215 down payment is required to register. The remaining balance can be paid at any time by logging into your student account. The final payment must be received by the first day of class. Students with an outstanding balance will not be able to schedule driving lessons.
