Segment 1
How long does it take to complete Segment 1?
The course lasts a minimum of three weeks and includes at least 24 hours in the classroom, 6 hours of driving, 4 hours of observation driving time, and a written examination. Students usually finish Segment 1 classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons with 2-3 weeks for the final class. Most finish sooner.
What happens if I miss a class?
You may miss class only for an illness or emergency with documented proof presented to the instructor. If you are absent, you must make up the class. You must attend the same class session missed in the segment 1 course in the next month. (e.g., If you missed day 5, you must attend day 5 of the next available segment 1 course the next month.) You and your instructor must agree on a day and time to make up the missed day.
Segment 2
When can I take Segment 2?
You must hold a Level 1 Learner's License for a minimum of three months. Before you can take segment 2, you must present a driving log showing that 30 of the 50 hours of parent-supervised driving time were completed, including 2 of 10 nighttime hours.
How long does it take to complete Segment 2?
Segment 2 includes a minimum of six hours of classroom instruction and a written exam. The class is a total of three days.
Policies
When can I start drivers ed?
You must be at least age 14 years and 8 months to begin Segment 1 driver education.
What is your refund policy?
Segment 1
- If the student decides not to take classes any longer AND the student/parents/guardian inform Lake Effect Driving School, LLC in writing before the beginning of the third class session, 75% of the total tuition will be refunded.
- After the beginning of the third class session, no refund shall be given.
Segment 2
- If the student decides not to take classes any longer AND the student/parents/guardian inform Lake Effect Driving School, LLC in writing before the beginning of the second class session/day 2, 50% of the total tuition will be refunded.
- After the beginning of the second class session, no refund shall be given.

We believe in delivering the highest quality driving education to our students, and our licensed instructors are dedicated to helping you become a confident and skilled driver.
Is there a cancellation fee for behind-the-wheel lessons?
All driving lesson cancellations must be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled drive time. This allows us to accommodate other students waiting for an appointment. Late cancellations will incur a $30 cancellation fee. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter, as it helps us maintain an efficient schedule for all our students. If you need to reschedule a lesson, please log onto our website as soon as possible to set up an alternative time that works for you.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my driving lesson?
If you need to cancel or reschedule a driving lesson, please remember to cancel your drive with at least 24 hours' notice so another student can sign up for it, and you will not be charged a $30 cancellation fee. You can cancel or reschedule your driving lessons by logging into your student account on our website.
When can I start the behind-the-wheel lessons?
Students can start the behind-the-wheel lessons any time after the second class.
Do you offer home pick-up and drop-off?
We do not offer pick-up and drop-off services. All driving lessons start and end at our driving school. If the student needs a ride, we may be able to accommodate pick-up and drop-off under certain circumstances. Call Lake Effect Driving School to see if arrangements can be made: (269) 235-9828.
What will I learn during my behind-the-wheel lessons?
Remember that behind-the-wheel lessons aim to teach you how to operate a vehicle, instill safe driving habits, and prepare you to handle various real-world driving scenarios confidently. Be attentive, ask questions, and take advantage of the opportunity to learn and improve your driving skills.
Will I have other students in the car with me?
Yes, there will be two students in the car. One will be driving and the other student will be observing the driving lesson. The exception is when a student is a "no-show," in which case you will be the only student in the car.
